The breech loading conversion represents a first departure from the front-loading Thuer conversions. One chamber of No. 170997 was countersunk to accommodate the cartridge's rimmed breech. That countersunk chamber is considered to have been an experimental procedure, abandoned when realizing that to countersink each chamber was not possible, due to the overlapping of each cartridge rim and therefore each cartridge's chamber...thus, first, the circumference of the cylinder had to be enlarged.
