The legendary UZI is the most famous and popular SMG (sub-machine gun) in the world for over 50 years, with sales of over 2,000,000 units worldwide, but arround 10 million of them was made by other licenced manufacturers. In 1950, after rigorous testing by the IDF, the UZI was chosen over a competing SMG design to be their new standard issue rifle. The UZI was patented in 1952 by the designer, Uziel Gal, who gave the production rights to the Israeli Ministry of Defense and by 1954 the first batch of 100 UZIs were given to the IDF for testing. In March of that year, the Ordnance Corps ordered 8,000 UZI SMG and the rest, as they say, is history. The UZI fires from open bolt position. The UZI's angular body is made from pressed steel parts. The UZI uses a unique blowback mechanism with a bolt that wraps around the end of the barrel. Empty cases are ejected through slots in the body.
