The Model 1862 Breech Loading Rifle was a single shot rimfire rifle designed by Benjamin Franklin Joslyn and made by Joslyn Firearms Company in Stonington, Connecticut in 1862. Model 1862 was improved Model 1861 and it used the Spencer .56-52 rimfire cartridge. The barrels were not designed to accept a bayonet. The Joslyn was loaded by pivoting the breech block on a hinge, secured by a friction latch with a hook tab on the 1862 model, later production employed a spring pull latch. Standard features include a brass contoured butt plate, brass trigger guard, single brass barrel band, two leaf hinged sight, saddle bar and riding ring on left side, six lands & grooves.
