The Berthier M1916 carbine (Mousqueton Berthier Mle 1892/M16) was designed by a French civilian engineer in the Algerian railways, named Emile Berthier. It was carbine version of the five-shot Mle 1916 Berthier rifle. It was chambered for 8 x 50mmR French (8 mm Lebel) cartridge, the first smokeless gunpowder cartridge to be made and adopted by any country. It appear in trenches of WWI in 1918.
