The Chassepot Model 1866 Carbine was bolt-action cavalry carbine version of Chassepot Model 1866 rifle. The finalized guns were brass mounted, the barrel was held in the stock by two bands and a nose cap, and the spatulate bolt handle was turned down against the stock. Butts were about 0.4in shorter than the infantry-rifle pattern, making the carbines easier to use on horseback.
