The M1893 Mauser was developed in 1893 by Paul Mauser of Oberndorf am Neckar, Germany. It was one of the most influential military rifles in history. Spain adopted the M1893 Mauser as the Fusil Mauser Espanol Modelo 1893, and in excess of 200,000 were ordered from Ludwig Loewe & Co. of Berlin–the corporate owners of Mauser Waffenfabrik. The Mauser Model 1893 was also adopted by other countries in other calibers, most notably the Ottoman Empire. By 1896, the Fabrica Nacional de Armas in Oviedo, Spain had begun manufac-turing Model 1893s and would continue to produce them until 1943 when a 98-type Mauser, the Fusil Espanol Modelo 1943, was adopted. Many of M1893 Mausers were used in Spanish-American War and latter imported by Samco Global Arms Imports on the U.S. market. The 7x57mm cartridge would become one of the most influential rifle rounds ever developed. It provided sustained velocity, flat trajectory, excellent accuracy, and deep penetration. At the same time, it produced light recoil. The new 7×57mm round, which used a 173 gr (11.2 g) full metal jacket bullet developing 700 m/s (2,300 ft/s) from a 29 inches (74 cm) barrel. The M1893 was much better rifle that smokeless-powder Krag-Jorgensen rifles that American soldiers had in Spanish-American War. Distinguishing characteristics of the Oviedo Model 1893 are: Oviedo logo consisting of crown, "Fabrica de Armas Oviedo" and the year of manufacture on the top of the reciever. Most have 29" barrels. Some examples with 22" barrels have been reported; these appear to have had their barrels shortened and fitted with new front sights, presumably by an importer. The bolts have a flat surface on the bottom of the face, which was supposed to provide more reliable feeding. Original bolts have straight handles.
